Printing Your Artwork the Archival Way

When ordering reproductions of your art, it's important to know about the material you are having your artwork printed on. When ordering a paper print it is best to choose paper that has been treated and is acid-free. When having a print on canvas produced, be sure to choose a canvas that has had the surface coated to protect the art from the underlying acids in the cotton canvas material. Why? Over time artwork that is not printed on acid-free materials will yellow; even if framed using archival materials. In order to ensure the longevity of your art print, it must be printed on archival material and framed using archival mat board and backers (with some exceptions).

The printing method used to help reproduced artwork keep its original appearance for many years is often referred to as Giclée printing. Giclée is a French word meaning "a spray or spurt of liquid". For the purposes of the world of artwork reproduction, we use the term to mean the process of printing on acid-free paper or canvas with a high-quality inkjet printer that uses long-lasting (light-fast) inks and can print in extreme detail. Therefore, with Giclée printing, the results yield a) vivid, close-to-original colors 2) crisp, clear reproduced details and c) long-lasting quality.
