Mixed Media & Needlework Landscape in Picture Frame

For this one-of-a-kind artwork, artist Heather Gittlin requested a picture frame and matboard combination that not only complements the artwork, but allows for its dimension to be part of the visual interest. To accomplish this, our expert picture framer Jenny started with a matboard that supports the scene. In this case, a tan linen top mat with a dark green under-mat was chosen. The picture frame that was chosen is made by Larson Juhl and features a dark brown, rustic finish and a deep rabbet (depth). The reason for choosing a frame with a deep rabbet is that the artwork itself has a lot of depth. It is made of layers of paint, fabric and needlework (see detail images).

When assembling the project, Jenny built up multiple layers of archival material (mostly foam core) to accommodate the depth of the work, before setting the matboards. Take a close look at the bottom left of the artwork and you'll notice how the "bushes" drape over the bottom matboard. A unique, creative choice. Jenny then put museum glass, an almost invisible picture framing glass with ultra-violet protection, over the matboards before inserting the assembly into the frame and sealing up the artwork.
